It has also been told of attempts to break into Government networks. Government departments have told the committee about the theft of laptops, many of them from employees' homes, others from motel rooms and government offices. Among a long list of equipment losses, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) reported 140 laptops had been lost or stolen in the past four years, while the Department of Industry had 180 computers lost or stolen. The Australian Crime Commission reported it had been targeted for electronic sabotage by an email contact from the US but it was unsuccessful. The committee heard earlier today of what the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet called a serious security breach when tapes containing Government information were lost by Telstra. The Department of Transport says it is seeking a new contract after the breach.
