Case of the Theft of the Trade Secrets

For a major dot.com, OnlineSecurity conducted a forensic investigation to determine if an executive who accepted a job with a competitor stole proprietary information. The hard drive from the executive's notebook and desktop computers were imaged. Our analysis revealed that, the night before he left, the executive downloaded all of the company's manufacturing specifications and distributor agreements from its server, which he then zipped and emailed via dialup ISP to the competitor.

Additionally, our reconstruction of deleted files identified e-mails sent between the executive and the competitor discussing his intent to provide the proprietary information if he was offered additional stock options in the new company.
